Name: Kainé
Canon: Nier
Canon Point: Ending C
Age: Wiki says 20, math says 28, or 23 if we don't count the 5 years she spent as a statue.

Background: https://nier.fandom.com/wiki/Kain%C3%A9

Personality: All her life, Kaine’s been told that there’s something wrong with her; she was born intersexed, everyone she’s gotten close to has died, she ended up possessed by a monster (not that all Shades are monsters, but Tyrann – the one inside her – was a sadistic serial killer, so the word applies)… and every single one of those was her fault, or so people claimed. She was sin incarnate. From an outside perspective, it’s easy enough to say that those accusations were false, even ridiculous... but, living with them day-to-day? It’s hard to keep denying them. Kaine ended up internalizing them, growing to loathe herself, to think she was every bit the monster she was accused of being.

She had one ally, early on: her grandmother, Kali. Kali was tough and foul-mouthed, but she was also caring and thoughtful (even if she wasn’t always great at expressing it); the only person, until Nier, who treated Kaine as a girl – a person – like any other. Kaine idolized Kali in a way that’s difficult to describe, but fairly easy to see… after all, she grew up to be just like the old bat. Filthy mouth and little patience, but care for her fellow man, and a desire to protect those she cared for.

…which is why it was so devastating to Kaine when Kali died. The old woman was literally her only ally in the world, and she was crushed to death by a Shade… a Shade which proceeded to mortally wound Kaine, herself. She’s saved, of course, by the timely intercession of Tyrann (who possesses her, and replaces her crushed limbs and ruptured organs with his own shadowy biomass), but let’s leave that for a bit. See, the point is, Kaine had a reprieve, a moment where not everything was terrible… and then it was ripped away. Not by accident, not by act of god, but by an intelligent, malevolent force. This, more than her own victimization, more than her self-loathing, more than any other force… this is what led to her explosive temper, and her utter hatred of Shades. This is the reason, even though she can later hear their voices (thanks to Tyrann) pleading for mercy, asking for forgiveness, why she has no mercy to spare for them. It wouldn’t be unreasonable to call it a crusade against Shades, but, honestly, “vendetta” fits better; there’s nothing holy or righteous about her aims, after all, and she’s under no illusions to the contrary. She’s making the world a safer place, yes, but only as a side result of satisfying her bloodlust.

This bloodlust is, incidentally, one of the reasons she isn’t fully possessed by Tyrann long before the game begins. He’s a sadist, as I said, and finds her unfathomable rage entertaining. Well, that, and it helps to strengthen her resolve, giving her what space marines call “the armour of contempt”; basically, a defense against corruption based on an absolute disdain for the source of it. So, basically, until she’s badly injured (as with the final Hansel and Gretel boss fight), Tyrann can’t take her over… but she also can’t push him out; after all, human limbs and organs don’t grow back from nothing. Without him, she’s back to being a helpless, dying mess. The upshot is: she finally became a sort of monster, like everyone had always told her she was. They were proved right.

Kaine had already been a bit reclusive, but, at this point, she withdrew from society altogether, preferring to live on her own in the wilderness. It’s important to understand, however, that this is no longer only about protecting herself; with Tyrann in play, she thinks she might actually be a danger to others. As a result, she ends up playing the part of the unseen protector, and killing Shades before they can get near the Aerie (the town she lived in as a child, and near to when staying with her grandmother). She ranges about, of course, when she starts feeling restless, but she always returns to that town; it’s the closest thing she has to a home, after all.

Now, at this point, I’ve almost exclusively talked about Kaine’s negative attributes… but, once she joins the hero’s party in-game, she starts to change. Nier is, after all, exactly the second person in Kaine’s entire life to express any sort of happiness that she… well, exists. He calls her a friend, and asks her – even after she’s taken revenge for her grandmother – to live on, and find joy in life. Even her grandmother was never so naked with her affection or praise, but here comes this big, dopey guy saying that he’d be sad if she died. Not inconvenienced, sad! And not because he wants anything from her, either; they’re just… friends. She had no idea what to do with this sort of affection or encouragement… but, little by little, it started to wear away at her self-loathing. By the end of the game, she’s largely given up on rage as her unifying principle, and Nier’s the reason why.

In short, she falls in love with him.

Anyway, there’s one more thing I’d like to touch on: Kaine’s affinity for the lost and the damaged. She’s lived as a pariah for so long that, even if she thinks she deserves it, she still understands what that sort of pressure, that sort of weight, can do to a person. There are a few “strays” (for lack of a better word) that we see Kaine’s softer side emerge with, even before Nier’s had a chance to do much for her self-worth. In the cases of both Fyra (a mute girl who was carried off by wolves) and Emil (an immortal child who petrifies anything he looks at), Kaine demonstrates a softness that one might have supposed was entirely alien to her. When she tells Emil, in particular, that “your eyes are not a sin”, she sounds like she’s talking to a younger version of herself, trying to convince that girl not to fall into a pit of self-loathing, simply because she was born with a penis. At the very least, she wanted to stop Emil from following her path, from losing his kindness and turning to hate; and, when he joins their party (as No. 7), and is ostracized by villagers, she camps out with him, doing her best to keep his spirits up. In fact, when Emil tries to tell Nier and Weiss about the night’s events, she stops him, obviously embarrassed, saying she has “a fucking image to maintain”. Sort of sweet, isn’t it?

Powers: Superhuman strength and speed, and skill with a pair of swords. She can also use some magic, which amounts to energy projectiles of varying sizes and strengths.

Inventory: Her clothes (if you can call them that), her swords, and a single Lunar Tear, which she'll wear in her hair.
